A few things
before you play.

A small, considered shortlist.
No one-size-fits-all winners.

Why trust the player count on a box?

It tells you the range of players the game supports. The group size where it plays best is a separate question. We use the named edition's publisher player range and age guidance as hard filters, then favor our editorial best player count. Editions can differ; check the box before buying. When available, Wikidata adds an independent comparison, not an override.

Why isn't my favourite game here?

This is a curated shortlist of 40 games, not every game in print. We include board, card, and party games for mixed groups. Shortlist last reviewed: October 15, 2026. The publisher source and edition for your pick are linked above.

What does ‘plays best at’ mean?

It's our editorial call about table feel and downtime, not a publisher fact, rating, or community poll. Games lose points as your group moves away from that count, especially at the edge of the printed range. Ties break alphabetically.

Do you get paid for this?

Yes, a little. Each Check price on Amazon button is an affiliate link. If you buy after clicking it, Amazon pays us a small commission and your price stays the same. That is the only way this site earns money. There is no subscription or paid plan, and you never need an account.

Does that change what you recommend?

The ranking is a fixed formula over player count, youngest age, play time, play style and our complexity estimate. Price and commission are never inputs, and every game on the shortlist gets the same treatment. If nothing fits, we say which setting we loosened. We never quietly leave out a player or lower a game's age guidance.

Why don't you show prices or ratings?

They change, and the right game is about fit. The Amazon button opens a search for the named game and edition so you can check the current price and rating there. Play times are publisher estimates; allow extra time to learn and set up your first game.
